Helping Seniors Make Ends Meet

We work hard all our lives and do our share to make this country great. Instead of retiring in dignity, nearly 300,000 Canadian seniors are living in poverty, and many middle-income retirees are struggling as well.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Paul Dewar and Jack Layton are putting forward practical ideas to protect your retirement savings, expand public pensions and improve seniors’ care. It’s time for a Prime Minister you can trust to offer real dignity to the seniors who built this country.

Paul Dewar and New Democrats:
Leadership you can trust

  • Pressed Harper to invest $700 million to increase the Guarantee Income Supplement to lift every senior out of poverty.
  • Introduced key motions in this Parliament calling for annual reviews of seniors’ income needs; for a Seniors Ministry so older Canadians’ needs get higher priority; and to expand CPP/EI coverage to those caring for family members at home.
  • Introduced legislation securing workplace pensions by moving unfunded pension liabilities to the front of the line of creditors to be paid out when employers go bankrupt.
  • Developed a national strategy to care for our aging population, with practical ideas to help with housing, prescription drugs, home care, long-term care and palliative care.
  • Alerted tens of thousands of Canadians that they were not receiving public pension amounts they were entitled to — because of Ottawa’s confusing application process.
  • Secured all-party support for the NDP Seniors Charter in 2006, enshrining every Canadian senior’s right to a secure income, adequate housing and quality health care.
