Statement on the passing of Algonquin Elder William Commanda

OTTAWA – New Democrat MP Paul Dewar (Ottawa Centre) has issued the following statement in reaction to the passing of Algonquin Elder William Commanda.

“I was deeply saddened to hear the news of Grandfather Commanda’s passing.

William Commanda was a pillar of our community. He was generous with his wisdom. He was a visionary and an exceptional person who leaves behind a legacy for all of us to follow.

I extend my deepest condolences to Chief Gilbert Whiteduck, the Grandfather’s family, the Algonquin Nation, and his followers in Canada and abroad.

We will miss his wisdom, his patience and his humour. Though he will not be with us in person, his memory will guide us in continuing his quest for justice and world peace.”
